Finding the blue zone

Icaria is a holistic health supplement brand that helps busy female professionals reduce stress and anxiety so they are free to enjoy their life.

Icaria, also spelled Ikaria (Greek: Ικαρία), is a Greek island in the Aegean Sea, 10 nautical miles (19 km) southwest of Samos. According to tradition, it derives its name from Icarus, the son of Daedalus in Greek mythology, who was believed to have fallen into the sea nearby. Icaria has been identified along with four other regions as a “blue zone,” i.e. an area where people tend to live measurably longer lives. Dan Buettner (National Geographic fellow, New York Times-bestselling author, and BlueZones.com founder) analyzed and researched what all these blue zones, including Ikaria, had in common and came up with a list of characteristics, called the power 9, that he observed in the blue zones: Life purpose, Stress reduction, Moderate calories intake, Plant-based diet, Moderate alcohol intake, especially wine, Engagement in spirituality or religion, Engagement in family life, and Engagement in social life.

As Legend has it, Icarus — a victim of his hubris — died at the Greek island of Samos. His father Daedalus, who was imprisoned for sabotaging the work for King Minos, created a plot to escape with his son. He fashioned a set of wings for himself and his son. Daedalus warned his son not to fly to close to the son. Icarus, enchanted by his ability to fly, disobeyed is father and flew too high. His wings melted and he fell into the sea and died. There is another part of the myth we weren’t told. Daedalus also told his son not to fly too close to the sea because the water will hinder the lift in his wings.
